As leaders, we didn't create most worldly challenges. But we do have a responsibility to create the conditions to help our people navigate.

Do you need to repaint the walls, or do you need to reevaluate whether the they should even exist at all? This is an analogy we use at the beginning of our work with organizations and it gets us far. One is iterative; you adjust a process, update a policy, refine a structure and keep moving. The other is transformational. With the “walls”, you’re dealing with how someone or a group of folks fundamentally sees the world and what they think is even possible.

There's a scenario I've seen repeat itself. A leader sits across from me, they’re accomplished, driven, often successful by every external measure, and says some version of the same thing: "I don't even recognize myself anymore." They're missing was clarity on who they wanted to be and a real, workable answer to the question of how to bring that to life daily and when things get hard. That's where values really kick in.
